Hello and welcome to Six Wins Set of the Week! The plan for this piece is to walk you through a beautifully designed play each week that every high school coach around the country should be running to implement in their next practice. Going forward, if you see a team run a set that is worthy of this prestigious honor please free to let us know via Twitter @SixWinsInMarch!

Without further ado, the inaugural Set of the Week goes to…

STEVE WOJCIECHOWSKI and the MARQUETTE GOLDEN EAGLES

The Game: Monday, November 20 vs VCU

Hard to believe this game happened in the past week with Thanksgiving and all of the basketball that comes with Feast Week each year, but yes, Marquette and VCU faced off last Monday in the opening game of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. It was a fun, up-tempo contest that featured VCU pressing all over the court and Marquette bombing threes from all over the Hawaiian Islands. Marquette ultimately pulled out the 94 to 83 win.

The Set Up

Marquette is a unique team in that it has a threesome of great shooters from the perimeter in Andrew Rowsey, Markus Howard, and Sam Hauser. All three shot over 44% from downtown last year with Howard shooting a mind boggling 54.7% that led the nation. This spacing their exceptional shooting ability provides combined with the green light that Wojo gives them makes it extremely difficult for any defense they come up against.

With five and a half minutes left in the game, the Golden Eagles run the following set for Rowsey. You can see the fifth-year senior complete a dribble handoff on the right wing and proceed to run off a triple staggered screen to get an open three-pointer at the left wing. After receiving the handoff, Howard stays at the top of the key leaving enough room for Rowsey to curl off the third screen from Hauser.

Now, I know you might be thinking, “How the heck can a play like that be the first Six Wins Set of the Week? A simple play that generated a MISSED three is really what gets you excited Uncle Panda?”

Well in homage to the great Billy Mays (may he rest in peace), “But wait, there’s more!”

The Play

The very next trip down the floor Marquette sets up in the same alignment on the floor. Howard runs the baseline to receive the same dribble handoff from Rowsey on the wing. Rowsey then runs off of the same staggered screens from Matt Heldt, Haanif Cheatham, and Sam Hauser. This is where it turns into a beauty by Wojciechowski.

Once Rowsey clears Hauser’s screen, Hauser darts to the corner that has just been vacated. Cheatham and Heldt both turn to complete this “screen the screener” action. The result can go into the basketball version of The Louvre:

Marquette is a team that is going to try and outscore you. The size of Howard and Rowsey create clear deficiencies on defense, but man can they put up points when they are rolling.

Wojo has lethal weapons at his disposal when you combine his two guards with Hauser at the stretch four and Cheatam slashing off the wing. Seeing him use his guys in a simple way that creates open looks is a joy to watch as a basketball fan. Sam Hauser would be the best shooter on 90% of teams in America, but on Marquette he is the third option from three.

So there you have it, the first edition of the Six Wins Set of the Week. Put it in the history books and see you next week!
